china is a country of between 1.3 and 1.5 billion people with a steady economic growth rate of 10 percent per year. this economic growth is fueled by coal. coal, like in the us, is prominent in china. it is also cheap and isnt used for anything else. coal however, is also very dirty, and particularly in the way it is being used in china. the us has clean coal technology that it can provide to china, but manufacturers are afraid hat the chinese will steal the technology and sell to the rest of the world for cheaper. however, i agree with sangers arguments in saying that the us should sell its clean coal technology to china in order to stimulate the us economy but also for the greater good of environmental stability. china argues that it has the right to use coal in order to industrialize, and the western nations say that this is unfair and that environmental stability wont work without the cooperation of everybody. well i feel that we need to work with what we have. in the us we still have a large amount of coal plants. nuclear energy is underutilized and taken out of commission. however, nuclear energy plants produce waste that is entirely controllable, and coal plants are easily convertible to natural gas, which is the cleanest fossil fuel and in large reserves in the us.
so in conclusion, the us should provide china to the extent that it can (not for free) and make the changes that it can itself can do without being overburdening or overzealous
I totally agree with you that United States should definitely sell its clean coals technology to China, for the sake of the environment. Apparently China has no intention of stopping its use of coals to power industry, and it seems to have little intention of investing much into its own clean coal technology. If the status quo continues, it won’t be only China suffering from its own use of dirty coals, but also us as well as everyone else in the globe. As the world power, United States should sell its clean coal technology so that China can use it to clean up its coal-use. If the US manufacturers are so scared about China using it to sell to other countries for cheaper price, perhaps, United States and China can get into some sort of bilateral agreement, to use the technology for its own use and not for sales to other countries…
I’m not feeling very optimistic about this. I not sure the whole idea of giving selling China this technology will be the positive affect everyone is hoping for. But hey China is always going to argue that the US is the big polluter and that we had out turn now it’s their turn. I think that even if the US did sell them the tech, it would still take years to implement, and yes we should take steps into saving the global environment, who knows, the outcomes of these decisions may surprise us.
